If your dog is refusing to eat their food, there are a few potential reasons and steps you can take to address the issue:
Freshness of Food: Check the expiration date on the dog food and ensure it is still fresh. Dogs can be sensitive to stale or spoiled food.
Heat: Dogs are a lot like us. If it is is summertime and hot, their appetites go down just like ours and they consume more water.
Change in Food: Sudden changes in your dog’s food brand or formula can cause them to refuse the new food. Transition to a new food gradually over 7-10 days.
Health Issues: Loss of appetite can be a sign of an underlying health problem, such as dental issues, digestive troubles, or illness. Schedule a vet check-up.
Picky Eating: Some dogs simply become picky eaters. Try mixing in tasty toppers like low-sodium broth, plain yogurt, or cooked unseasoned meat.
Meal Schedule: Feed your dog at consistent times each day. Free-feeding (leaving food out at all times) can lead to pickiness.
Providing Variety: Rotate between 2-3 different high-quality dog food formulas to prevent boredom with the same food every day.
By addressing these common causes, you can get your dog enthusiastic about mealtime again.
